Our philosophy

Thoughtfulness made visible

Omoiyari (思いやり) is often described as empathy expressed through attentive, considerate action.

From feeling to doing

Omoiyari involves noticing another person's circumstances, imagining what may help, and responding sensitively — often before anyone asks. It is frequently quiet, practical and free of expectation of praise or reward.

The word is commonly associated with omou (to think or feel) and yaru (to direct or send). Like many cultural ideas, its meaning is richer than a single English translation.

Inspired by Japan, shaped for Australia

We respectfully acknowledge the Japanese cultural origins of omoiyari. Our aim is not to claim ownership of the idea, but to learn from it and encourage an Australian culture of everyday consideration.

Our proposed mission

To encourage empathy, respectful communication and practical kindness across Australian society, particularly when people face disagreement, stress, vulnerability or public scrutiny.

What we stand for

Human dignity, care for others, civility in disagreement, respect for people serving the community, and personal responsibility for the effect of our words and actions.

Respect does not mean silence. People must remain free to criticise decisions, protest peacefully, report misconduct, seek accountability and speak truthfully about harm. Omoiyari asks us to do so without threats, dehumanisation or personal abuse.
